Bird flu in cats
The bird flu continues to spread claiming lives of mammals and birds. Last February a case of Avian influenza in a cat was reported in Germany. The cat was found dead on the island of Ruegen. Numerous Tigers and wild felines died of the virus in Asian zoos. Poultry meat is the probable source NA

Is Pit bull ingle breed oulaw the right answer
Recently many news headlines have been dedicated to pit bulls and their danger to the public. Some politicians are trying to capitalize on incidents of dog attacks involving pit bulls by trying push through legislation to outlaw and eliminate the breed from the City of Chicago and other municipalities. For some reason, there is an increasing trend of questionable animal related legislation that may also challenge constitutional laws and human rights. Quite often, these motives are based on false, non-credible information or a few "opinionated experts". na

Dog flu- a new dog disease
Canine influenza (flu) is a new emerging disease in dogs. Dogs develop signs similar to Kennel cough which include coughing, sneezing and nasal discharge. There is no vaccine available and all dogs in grooming or boarding facilities can catch the virus. NA

Veterinarians help in disaster area
Veterinary teams are busy saving lives in new Orleans caring for all animals from dogs to pet rats and even alligators. These efforts are conducted by the Veterinary Medical Assistance team funded by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. NA

State of Illinois issues Lyme disease risk warning
The Illinois Department of Public Health issued a Lyme disease alert after deer ticks found in DuPage County tested positive for Borrelia,the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Deer ticks tested positive for the disease in Will and Grundy county in the past. Public Health Department officials also found American dog ticks and lone star ticks at DuPage County testing sites. A new tax for pet owners- No More!

A new tax for pet owners in the works
House Bill 315 (Representative Daniel J. Burke (D) 23rd District) and Senate Bill 2078 (Senator Don Harmon (D)-Oak Park) introduced in Springfield, impose a $3.00 tax on each pet vaccinated for rabies. Supposedly to fund stray pet population control. Pet owners who wish to prevent the tax from passing should contact the state representatives urgently and express their objection. Lose weigt with your dog
People looking for a way to lose weight, may want to trade in a pill for a pooch. A first of its kind experiment to put people and their pets on a diet and exercise program, found that both lost weight and kept it off, though dogs did better than their owners and did not drive them crazy begging for food. Heartworm medication Recall
On June 9th, 2004, the FDA announced a CLASS II recall on the PROHART 6 heartworm preventative treatement (FDA Recall - Prohart 6). If you are considering using this treatment on you dog, please be sure you are aware of the potential dangers. It could save your dog`s life. NA

Distemper alert
The Chicago Tribune reported this morning that there have been 3 cases of canine distemper reported in Chicago. Dog owners are being encouraged to vaccinate their pets. Chicago Animal Care and Control officials diagnosed two dogs with distemper several weeks ago. The dogs had been in an animal shelter at the same time, and officials believed one contaminated the other, said Nikki Proutsos, executive director. But a few days ago, a stray dog tested positive, Proutsos said, and the source of the virus is still unknown. NA

Business/Education/Community Partnership
The-vet.net and Kennedy Junior High School have joined the Naperville District 203 Business Education Community Partnership with the Naperville school district. Our goal is to promote student interest in animal science, and help enhance life quality of pets and their families through improved pet care. The program will engage students in various aspects of animal care, biology and the role of pets in our lives. NA
